Step into a land seen through the photography of Réhahn. His book Precious Heritage is the result of nearly ten years of work to meet and photograph all 54 recognized ethnic groups in Vietnam, including subgroups and villages where clothing, techniques and cultural symbols differ even under the same official classification.

This project does not come from short photo or studio production cycles. It reflects the cultural range of Vietnam through community craft, family makers, belief systems, clothing construction and visual identity told by the people photographed themselves. Réhahn met textile artisans, dressmakers, jewelry makers, herbal dye producers, wood frame carvers and community keepers of symbolic objects in the same village environments where the clothing and handmade materials exist. Instead of turning culture into decorative narrative, the book documents identity through individuals, family units and local makers whose work carries cultural symbols that are photographed in their original context.

The portraits in Precious Heritage show individuals wearing authentic ceremonial dress, clothing that is specific to a family or village, costumes that are no longer produced, fabrics dyed in herbal pigments, silver and copper jewelry made from domestic tools, indigo-dyed cotton, bark-thread textiles, hand-woven hats, hand-woven baskets, bronze spiritual tools and carved wood frames that carry family symbols. Each photograph stands independently in subject and background. A face. A place. A costume. A moment. The book avoids generalized narration. There is no repetition of the same person or story. Every portrait has its own context.

Some of the smallest communities shown in Precious Heritage include groups that number little more than 300 people, and the clothing displayed represents some of the last examples of designs that are no longer being made. This does not describe value through emotion only, but through scarcity, physical presence, and cultural change.

Réhahn’s photography has also appeared in international press, including National Geographic, BBC, Condé Nast Traveller, and Lonely Planet. The book is a bridge between photographer and reader, sharing encounters directly through stories told by the people photographed and through the visual evidence of the portraits themselves.

This book works well as a gift, especially for anyone who enjoys photography that shows Vietnam’s cultural diversity, clothing detail and portraits that feel personal without needing explanation. The images and stories stand on their own: useful to revisit, share, and display, not tied to a franchise or multi-volume requirement. For readers who love Vietnam photographs, portraits where clothing detail remains visible, or books that can live on display and be opened often, Precious Heritage becomes a meaningful gift that lasts because it does not require interpretation, only curiosity.
